  • To compare the amount of blood lost during periodontal flap surgery using Lidocaine 2 % with either 1:50,000 or 1:100,000 epinephrine was compared

  • N= 20 surgeries on 10 graduate perio clinic patients
  • Similar volumes of 1:50,000 or 1:100,00 epinephrine-containing Lidocaine 2 % was injected on contralateral posterior sextants of each patient. Blood loss was determined by the cyanmethemoglobin comparison technique

Procedures using lidocaine 2% with 1:100,000 epinephrine generally had more than twice as much blood loss as compared with Lidocaine 2% with 1:50,000 epinephrine.

Clinical Significance:

The use of 1:50,000 epi results is 50% less blood loss during flap surgeries.
